A Music Icon: I.K Dairo MBE Commemorative Exhibition

A Music Icon: I.K. Dairo will commemorate the anniversary of 55 years since Dairo received his MBE for services to music across the Commonwealth and in doing so; recognise the only African musician to have received such an honour.

Using research, workshops and an exhibition, the project will uncover the life and works of I.K. Dairo, the father of juju music and explore the legacy of his work, offering a valuable insight into African heritage, as part of Black History Month 2018.Tracing his achievements from 1957, when he created the ‘Morning Star Orchestra’ until his membership of the Ethnomusicology department at the University of Washington, Seattle; the project will disseminate the sounds, story and philosophy of one of Africa’s first international music stars to new audiences. The legacy of I. K. Dairo becomes even more illustrious when one considers that he was also awarded the MBE two years ahead of The Beatles.
