St Albans and Harpenden Food and Drink Awards - The 2015 Winners

The St Albans and Harpenden Food and Drink Awards celebrate the wide variety of food and drink businesses, venues and professionals that we have across the District. There are 11 categories in total; 10 are decided by public vote along with scrutiny of a judging panel and one is a special award decided by the steering group.

The winners were announced at the Food & Drink Awards evening on October 5th 2015.

The Award Categories

Best Bar

A bar is a contemporary venue influenced by design, atmosphere and music, which has a varied drinks menu ranging from ales, world lagers (i.e. Peroni, San Miguel, etc), cocktails, wines and champagnes.

Finalists:

-   Mokoko Cocktail Bar & Grill, Verulam Road, St Albans
-   The Snug, French Row, St Albans

Best Independent Food/Drink Shop

A food/drink shop is a venue selling food/drink of all types for people to purchase and take home.

Finalists:
-   BEER:shop, London Road, St Albans
-   Buongiorno Italia, Lattimore Road, St Albans
-   Parker & Vine, Leyton Road, Harpenden

Best Café

A café is a venue that serves breakfast, lunch and/or afternoon tea to enjoy in the venue or to take away, as well as soft drinks and hot beverages.

Finalists:
-   Barrisimo, St Peter's Street, St Albans
-   Canteen, George Street, St Albans
-   Bakehouse, Heritage Close, St Albans


And the winner is...Barrisimo 


Best Newcomer

A newcomer is a venue, person or business that has been in the area for less than 1 year from the date of the awards (6 October), and have had an influence within the local demographic for food and drink.

-   The Great Northern, London Road, St Albans

Best Local Producer

A local producer is a venue that produces raw ingredients such as meat and dairy or other products made from raw ingredients, including brewers, bakers, cider makers, cheese producers, etc.

-   Farr Brew, Harpenden
-   Redbournbury Mill, Redbourn

Best Local Restaurant

A local restaurant is a venue that serves good food at lunchtime and into the evening, providing alcoholic beverages and offers a more formal dining experience than a café.

Finalists:

-   Lussmanns Fish & Grill Restaurant, St Albans
-   THOMPSON @ Darcy's, Hatfield Road, St Albans

Best Pub

A good pub is a community focused venue that serves up a range of traditional ales, good food, comfort and conversation.

-   Great Northern, London Road, St Albans

Best Takeaway

A takeaway is a venue that allows people to purchase food and/or beverages, which is predominantly taken away but there may also be limited seating available.

-   Godfrey's Fish & Chips, High Street, Harpenden
-   Hatch, The Maltings, St Albans
-   Lebanese Kitchen, Stanhope Road, St Albans


And the winner is...Lebanese Kitchen


Most Family Friendly Venue

Family friendly venues go that extra mile for children and young people making their experience more enjoyable while presenting a varied, healthy children’s menu for babies through to teenagers and may serve half-portions of the main menu.

-   Nice, High Street, Harpenden
-   Relish Real Burgers, Civic Close, St Albans

Food and Drink Champion

The winner for this award is one of the winners from the other awards and was chosen by the awards sponsor and steering group.

The Kate D'Arcy Award

This Award is a special award in memory of Kate D’Arcy, a much loved restaurateur who died in June 2010. This Award is for a person who has exceeded normal expectation by providing outstanding service and delivering a faultless experience.
